Inherited from Old Ruthenian хво́йный (xvójnyj), from Old East Slavic *хво́инъ (*xvóinŭ), from Proto-Slavic *xvòjьnъ. By surface analysis, хво́я (xvója) +‎ -ний (-nyj).
