[edit]Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠴᠡᠷᠢᠭ (čerig), from Middle Mongol ꡅꡠ
ꡘꡞꡂ, from Proto-Mongolic *čerig, cognate to Proto-Turkic *čerig, although it is unclear which form is a borrowing from the other.
Compare Buryat сэрэг (sereg), Kalmyk церг (tserg), Daur celle, Mongghul qirig, Turkish çeri (“soldier”), Chuvash ҫар (śar, “army”).
