Etymology

Compounded from шэсць (šescʹ) +‎ дзесяць (dzjesjacʹ), or six tens. Compare Old Church Slavonic шесть десѧтъ (šestĭ desętŭ). Other cognates include Ukrainian шістдеся́т (šistdesját) and Russian шестьдеся́т (šestʹdesját).
