From Old Turkic iriŋ, yiriŋ (pus), from Proto-Turkic verbal stem *iri- (to decay; to turn sour, coagulate).

Cognate with Tuvan, Kyrgyz ириң (iriñ), Khakas ірінъ (írínʺ), Uzbek yiring, Turkish irin (pus), etc.
