Etymology[edit]

From Middle Mongol ᠡᠷᠬᠡᠰᠢᠶᠡᠯ (erkesiyel, “power, privilege”) + ᠲᠡᠢ (tei, commitative suffix). By surface analysis, эркшл (erkşl) +‎ тә (tä). The root is ultimately from Proto-Mongolic *erke (“power, might”); the second part of the word is of unknown origin.
