From Proto-Mongolic *ïmaxan, cognate with Khitan [Khitan Small needed] (ê.ma), related through borrowing or inheritance with Proto-Turkic *ɨmga.

Compare Dongxiang iman, Old Turkic 𐰢𐰍𐰀 ((a)mɣa).
