From Proto-Slavic *(j)ěskravъ(jь) (sparky). Related to Proto-Slavic *jьskra (a spark), *ěsknь(jь) (clear).

Cognate with Belarusian яскравы (jaskravy), Polish jaskrawy, Upper Sorbian jaskrawy.
