From Proto-Turkic *yāk (side, direction).

Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (jaq, side, direction); Kazakh жақ (jaq), Kyrgyz жак (jak), Uzbek yoq, Uyghur ياق (yaq, side, direction).
