From Persian قنداق (qondâq), from Ottoman Turkish قونداق, from Byzantine Greek κοντάκιον (kontákion), diminutive of Byzantine Greek κόνταξ (kóntax, pole), diminutive of κοντός (kontós, pole). Cognate with Turkish kundak, etc.
