From Persian قنداق (qondâq), from Ottoman Turkish قونداق, from Byzantine Greek κοντάκιον (kontákion), diminutive of Byzantine Greek κόνταξ (kóntax, “pole”), diminutive of κοντός (kontós, “pole”). Cognate with Turkish kundak, etc.
