From Proto-Turkic *kïyn- (hard, difficult).[1]

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (qïjïn, torment; punishment); Tatar кыен (qıyın, difficult), Kazakh қиын (qiyn, difficult); Kyrgyz кыйын (kıyın, difficult), Uzbek qiyin (difficult), Uyghur قىيىن (qiyin, difficult); Southern Altai кыйын (kïyïn, torment, suffering; punishment).
