Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kïr (uncultivated land).

Compare with Tatar кыргый (qırgıy, wild, savage), Kazakh қырағы (qyrağy, watchful; sagacious), Kyrgyz кыраакы (kıraakı, watchful; sagacious, forward-looking).
