Etymology 1[edit]

From *sabaq ‎(stem of plant; haulm; sprout), which is a diminutive form from Proto-Turkic *sāp ‎(stem of plant).

Compare with Tatar, Kyrgyz, Southern Altai сабак ‎(sabaq), Kazakh, Shor сабақ ‎(sabaq), Karachay-Balkar сабакъ ‎(sabaq, stem, stalk); Yakut сабаҕа ‎(sabağa, butt end of tree).
