Etymology

From մնացական (mnacʻakan, staying, lasting), wishing the child to have a long life. Typologically Ačaṙyan compares Turkish Dursun, from durmak (to stop, stay); Armenian Կեցուն (Kecʻun), from կենալ (kenal, to stand, stay); Italian Durante (literally enduring). Compare also Persian بمانی (Bemâni, literally may you stay, survive!) and Akkadian 𒀭𒀝𒆪𒁺𒌨𒊑𒋀 (/Nabû-kudurri-uṣur/, Nebuchadnezzar, literally O god Nabu, preserve/defend my firstborn son!). The name is in use from the 17th century up until now.
