Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from an Iranian name formed with the etymon of ուխտ (uxt, “vow, covenant, pact”), with a Grecized ending as in Վրթանէս (Vrtʻanēs), Ներսէս (Nersēs).

Ուխտիանէս) անիծիւք փակեաց․ եւ անդարձ լեալ գտեալ չարեացն ամենեքին առ հասարակ բնաջինջ եղեալ սատակեցան յերկրէ։ Որ եւ յետոյ փոխի ի Քրիստոս սուրբ հայրապետն․ եւ յաջորդէ զաթոռ նորին Եղիազար՝ այր բարի եւ ազնուական։ Սա էր եպիսկոպոս ի Շաքւոյ, որ ի վախճանելն Ուխտանիսի (var. Ուղտանէսի, Ուխտիանիսի) ի ժողովի անդ դիպեալ կոչմանն ընդ այլ եպիսկոպոսունսն, զորոյ չարափառ ոմանք զգալն նորա ի ժողովն պարսաւէին։

Ułtanēsi, Uxtianisi) i žołovi and dipeal kočʻmann ənd ayl episkoposunsn, zoroy čʻarapʻaṙ omankʻ zgaln nora i žołovn parsawēin.
- Because of their unlawful marriages, the blessed patriarch Uxtanēs heaped curses upon them, and when they would not turn from the evil they had contrived, they were all annihilated and exterminated from the face of the earth. After this the blessed patriarch returned to Christ, and Ełiazar, a good and noble man, succeeded to the see. He was bishop of Šak‘i, and at the death of Uxtanēs was present at the synod summoned there with the other bishops. As he went into the synod, certain heretical people censured him.
