Etymology[edit]

Through Persian, from Arabic رَفِيع ‎(rafīʿ, lofty), from رَفَعَ ‎(rafaʿa, to lift). Began to be used only after Armenian writer of 19th century Hakob Melik-Hakobian took that as his pen name.
