Etymology[edit]

The older form is աղբեւր ‎(ałbewr), by dissimilation from *արբեւր ‎(*arbewr), by adding a prothetic vowel to *րբեւր ‎(*rbewr), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrewr with regular metathesis. Cognate with Ancient Greek φρέαρ ‎(phréar, well, reservoir), Gothic 𐌱𐍂𐌿𐌽𐌽𐌰 ‎(brunna).
