Perhaps from one of the languages of Asia Minor. Compare ἄλιψ ‎(álips, rock) attested by Hesychius.

The Georgian word was borrowed anciently, when ղ ‎(ł) was pronounced as [ɫ]. The Persian was borrowed later, when ղ ‎(ł) became [ʁ].
