Etymology[edit]

A Middle Iranian borrowing. Compare Middle Persian YHNCLWN-tn' (appurdan), ʾp̄l- (appar-, to steal), ʾp̄l (appar, robbery, theft), Manichaean Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾpwrd), ʾp(w)r-. Ačaṙean explains the Iranian formation as *apa- (away) + *par- (to pass), comparing Avestan 𐬥𐬌-𐬞𐬁𐬭𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (ni-pāraiieiti, to appropriate something) and Sanskrit अपपरे (apa-pare, to go off). Note also dialectal Turkish aparmak (to take away).
