Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

A Middle Iranian borrowing. Compare Middle Persian YHNCLWN-tn' ‎(appurdan), ʾp̄l- ‎(appar-, to steal), ʾp̄l ‎(appar, robbery, theft), Manichaean Middle Persian ʾpwrd, ʾp(w)r-. Ačaṙean explains the Iranian formation as *apa- ‎(away) + *par- ‎(to pass), comparing Avestan [script needed] ‎(ni-pārayeiti, to appropriate something) and Sanskrit अपपरे ‎(apa-pare, to go off). Note also Turkish dialectal aparmak ‎(to take away).
