Etymology[edit]

According to Ačaṙean, the earlier form is առեւծ ‎(aṙewc), with prothetic ա- ‎(a-) from *ռեւծ ‎(*ṙewc), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewg- or *h₁rewǵ- ‎(to roar) with cognates in Ancient Greek ἐρεύγομαι ‎(ereúgomai, to roar, to bellow), ὠρυγή ‎(ōrugḗ, roar), Latin rūgio ‎(to roar), Old Church Slavonic ръзати ‎(rŭzati, to neigh) (Russian ржать ‎(ržatʹ)), Middle Irish rucht ‎(roar, howl), Old English rēoc ‎(wild). This is accepted by J̌ahukyan with reservation, but rejected by Olsen who considers the word etymologically unclear.
