Armenian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Learned borrowing from Old Armenian ասուպ (asup), found only in HHB citing Albertus Magnus,[1] several medieval Armenian translations of whom are known. Borrowed from Medieval Latin asub (meteor) attested in the writings of Albertus Magnus, which the Armenian translator simply transliterated. Asub, assub is a Latinized form of Arabic أَشْهُب (ʔašhub), plural of شِهَاب (šihāb, meteor).

Note also Middle Armenian ասպ (asp, comet) in Mxitʻar Ayrivanecʻi.[2]
