Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain. Martirosyan proposes derivation from Proto-Armenian *arast, *erast ‎(rib, mountain, mountain-ridge), which may be identified with երաստան ‎(erastan), +‎ -ոյ ‎(-oy).
