The origin is unknown.[1][2] Perhaps from an Iranian word related to the source of բազմիմ (bazmim).[2]

Usage notes[edit]

The meaning "railing, balusters" given by some dictionaries and adopted in the modern literary language is a result of misunderstanding.[1]
