Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

According to Martirosyan the basic meaning is ‘a soft lump of something; swelling; a roundish projecting part of the body’ ← ‘swollen, grown’ (compare բլթակ ‎(bltʿak)). He derives the word from *բուլ ‎(*bul), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰuH-l-, from the root *bʰuH- ‎(to grow), +‎ -իթ ‎(-itʿ).
