According to Martirosyan perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *vól-ih₂. Related to գաղջ ‎(gałǰ) and cognate with Lithuanian vìldyti ‎(to chill, let something cool), Proto-Germanic *wallaną, whence Gothic 𐍅𐌿𐌻𐌰𐌽 ‎(wulan, well up, boil over), Old Norse vella ‎(to wall over, boil), Old English weallan.
