Etymology

A tabooistic transformation of earlier *երազգ (*erazg), borrowed from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Parthian *razg/*ragz or (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Persian *razga-, from Proto-Indo-European *resg- (to waive, to plait). Cognates include Latin restis, Lithuanian regzti, Russian розга (rozga), Sanskrit रज्जु (rajju, rope). The word is also attested as երազգայից (erazgayicʻ), ablative case of *երազգայք (*erazgaykʻ), a nominative plural formed from *երազգայ (*erazgay), the old genitive/dative of *երազգ (*erazg). The old instrumental *երազգաւ (*erazgaw) is attested in the toponym Երազգաւորս (Erazgawors).
