Probably from Proto-Indo-European *ḱluH-r-yo- or *ḱluH-r-yeh₂-(light, bright, clear, clean, joyful). Cognates include Latin cluo(to clean), Welsh clir(light, bright, clear, clean, joyful), Lithuanian šlúoti(to wipe), Ancient Greek κλύζω(klúzō), Gothic 𐌷𐌻𐌿𐍄𐍂𐍃(hlutrs, pure, clean).
