Old Armenian[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From *արշալուրջ (*aršalurǰ). The second part is լուրջ (lurǰ, half-dark). The first part is probably an Iranian borrowing; compare Avestan 𐬀𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬱𐬀 (auruša, white), Sanskrit अरुष (aruṣá, reddish, light red, glowing, fire-coloured) and the Old Armenian loanword Արուսեակ (Aruseak). Alternatively, the first part is from արջն (arǰn, black; dark). The forms ending in -լոյս (-loys) were modified folk-etymologically under the influence of լոյս (loys).

Noun[edit]

արշալուրշ (aršalurš) indeclinable

  1. the last part of the night which is followed by the dawn, probably twilight
