From Proto-Indo-European *kh₂eid-t- (to cut, hew). Cognates include Latin caedō (to cut, hew), Middle Dutch heien and perhaps Sanskrit खिदति (khidati, to tear, press). The words խեթ (xetʿ), խեթեմ (xetʿem), խէթ (xētʿ), խիթ (xitʿ), խոթեմ (xotʿem), խութ (xutʿ) and խօթ (xōtʿ) are ablauts of this.
