Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Old Armenian կիթառ (kitʻaṙ, cithara, lyre). The extension of the meaning to “guitar” is a semantic loan from European languages, e.g. Russian гита́ра (gitára), Italian chitarra, etc.
