Middle Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Ačaṙyan remarks that the similarity with Kurdish qilêr(dirt, filth) is accidental and leaves the origin open.

According to J̌ahukyan, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gu-l-ēro-, from *gew-(to bend, curl) and cognate with German Keule(club, cudgel), Kaule(round objct), kullern(to roll). Alternatively, a Kartvelian borrowing: compare Georgian ყლე(q̇le).
