Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰoworo-, from *ǵʰowero-, from *ǵʰew-(to pour), with a semantic development ‘to pour, spill, gush’ → ‘bed of torrential stream, ravine’.

Alternatively, and less likely, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰoh₁ro-(gap, empty space), whence Ancient Greek χῶρος(khôros), Tocharian B kāre(pit, hole).

Noun[edit]

ձոր ‎(jor)

  1. valley, ravine
  2. bed of a torrent
