Old Armenian

Etymology

From Parthian [Manichaean needed] (nʾwʾz /⁠nāwāz⁠/, skipper), from Iranian *nau- (ship) + *az- (to drive, to lead); the first is cognate with նաւ (naw), the second with ածեմ (acem). Compare Avestan 𐬥𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬁𐬰𐬀 (nauuāza-, skipper) and Sanskrit नावाज (nāvājá-, skipper, boatman).
