Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain. Judging from some dialectal variants the earlier form must have been *պատուրհան (*paturhan). Folk etymology explains the word as պատ (pat) + հանել (hanel), i.e. “a hole in the wall”.
