Etymology[edit]

An Iranian borrowing, probably from Median. Compare Persian برنج ‎(birinj, brass) and پرنگ ‎(piring, copper). The Iranian word was also borrowed as Turkish pirinç ‎(brass), and may even be the ultimate source of English bronze.
