Etymology[edit]

An Iranian borrowing, probably from Median. Compare Persian برنج (birinj, brass) and پرنگ (piring, copper). The Iranian word was also borrowed as Turkish pirinç (brass), Georgian ბრინჯაო (brinǰao, bronze) and may even be the ultimate source of English bronze.
