Etymology[edit]

A dialectal word which has been adopted as the standard designation of hazelnut. From Arabic بُنْدُق (bunduq, hazelnut), q.v., under influence from պնդ- (pnd-, durable, strong) and the suffix -ուկ (-uk). The earliest attestation of the form պնդուկ (pnduk) is from 1633. Middle Armenian has պնդուխ (pndux), պնտուխ (pntux), ֆնտուխ (fntux) from the 15th century.
