Etymology[edit]

From Arabic بُنْدُق ‎(bunduq, hazelnut). Contaminated with պինդ ‎(pind), oblique stem պնդ- ‎(pnd-), and the suffix -ուկ ‎(-uk). Ultimately from Ancient Greek Ποντικόν κάρυον ‎(Pontikón káruon). The earliest attestation is 1633.
