A borrowing from an unknown source reflected also in other languages of the region, namely Classical Syriac ܣܘܒܝܢܝܬܐ pl (sōḇīnyāṯā, spears), Jewish Babylonian Aramaic סוּפִינָא (sūp̄īnā), סוֹפִינָא (sōp̄īnā, spear-tip), Akkadian 𒄑𒁀 (suppinnu, suppīnu [GEŠBA], a tool (apparently with a metal blade and wooden handle) used in brick making), Ancient Greek σιβύνη (sibúnē), συβίνη (subínē), σιγύνης (sigúnēs), ζιβύνη (zibúnē, spear), Persian زوبین (zôbin, a kind of short spear used by Gilanis), ژوبین (žôbin), ژوپین (žôpin, a sort of spear or demi-lance), Middle Georgian ზუფანი (zupani), ზუფინი (zupini), ზუფი (zupi, javelin).
