From *տատուրակ (*taturak), from Median τατύρασ (tatúras) (attested by Athenaeus), from Proto-Indo-European *teter- (grouse). Indo-European cognates include Ancient Greek τετράων (tetráōn), Sanskrit तित्तिर (tittirá) and Latin turtur.
