Etymology

From Proto-Semitic *ʔahl-. Note that this Hebrew form is peculiar to the Tiberian vocalization. The Palestinian vocalization points to אַהֶל (ʾáhel) instead, truer to the vowel in every other known cognate.

אוהל / אֹהֶל • (óhel) m (plural indefinite אוהלים / אֹהָלִים, singular construct אוהל / אֹהֶל־, plural construct אוהלי / אָהֳלֵי־) [pattern: קֹטֶל]

1. tent (a pavilion or portable lodge consisting of skins, canvas, or some strong cloth, stretched and sustained by poles, used for sheltering people from the weather)
2. (Judaism) A collective term for all that covers a dead body or that a dead body covers; used in legal discussions of purity and impurity.
3. (Judaism) ohel (a structure erected over the grave of a great and righteous person)
4. (אֹהֶל־, óhel-) singular construct state form of אוהל (óhel)‎.
