     וְנִשְׁאַר־בּוֹ עוֹלֵלֹת כְּנֹקֶף זַיִת שְׁנַיִם שְׁלֹשָׁה גַּרְגְּרִים בְּרֹאשׁ אָמִיר אַרְבָּעָה חֲמִשָּׁה בִּסְעִפֶיהָ פֹּרִיָּה נְאֻם־יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

     V-nish'ar bo 'olalót k-nóqef záyit shnáyim shloshá garg'rím b-rosh amír arba'á bi-s'iféha poriyá n'um Adonái Elohéi Yisraél

     Yet there shall be left therein gleanings, as at the beating of an olive-tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the branches of the fruitful tree, saith the LORD, the God of Israel.

     רִבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל בֵּי רִבִּי יוֹסֵי אָמַר מִשּׁוּם אָבִיו אֶשְׁכּוֹל שֶׁבִּיכֵּר בּוֹ גַּרְגִּר יְחִידִי כּוּלּוֹ חִיבּוּר לְמַעְשְׂרוֹת

     Ríbbi Yishma'él bei Ríbbi Yoséi amár mi-shúm avív, eshkól she-bikér bo gargír y'ḥidí kuló ḥibbur l-ma'srót.

     Rabbi Ishmael son of Rabbi Yose said in his father's name: a cluster where a single grape ripened is all connected for tithes.

   • a. 217 C.E., Mishnah, Pe'ah 6:5:

     שְׁנֵי גַרְגְּרִים, פֶּרֶט, וּשְׁלשָׁה אֵינָן פֶּרֶט.

     Shnei garg'rím, péreṭ; u-shloshá einán péreṭ.

     Two grapes are gleanings, and three grapes are not gleanings.

Usage notes

• In most manuscripts this noun is vocalized גַּרְגַּר (gargár), but in some it is vocalized as גַּרְגִּר (gargír).
