Etymology[edit]

Cognate with Classical Syriac ܕܒܠܬܐ. From an unused root akin to זָבַל, probably meaning 'to press together, form into a ball.'

דְּבֵלָה (dveláhf (plural indefinite דְּבֵלִים, singular construct דְּבֶלֶת־)

  1. (biblical) fig cake, ball of compressed figs
    • Tanach, Isaiah 38:21, with translation of the King James Version:
      וַיֹּאמֶר יְשַׁעְיָהוּ, יִשְׂאוּ דְּבֶלֶת תְּאֵנִים; וְיִמְרְחוּ עַל-הַשְּׁחִין, וְיֶחִי.
      vayómer yesha'yahu yis'u dvélet t'enim v'yim'r'chu 'al-hashchin v'yechi.
      Isaiah had said, “Prepare a "poultice" of figs and apply it to the boil, and he will recover.”
