Etymology 1[edit]

From Aramaic דּוּגְמָא ‎(dūḡmāʾ), from Ancient Greek δείγμα ‎(deígma), from the verb δείχνω ‎(deíchno, to point).

Alternative forms[edit]

  1. a example, a sample, a specimen
  2. a pattern
Usage notes[edit]
  • As with other feminine loanwords from Aramaic, the Academy of the Hebrew Language recommends [1] that דוגמה be written with a ה at the end (as shown here), rather than with א (as in Aramaic). Nonetheless, the spelling with א is still common in Hebrew – perhaps more common than the recommended spelling.
