Etymology[edit]

Likely a remnant of the accusative case (used adverbially to mean “at night”) of לַיִל(láyil), from Proto-Semitic *layl-. Cognate with Arabic لَيْل(layl), لَيْلَة(layla), Aramaic לֵילְיָא(lēləyā), Classical Syriac ܠܹܠܝܵܐ(lēlyā).
