From a primitive Biblical Hebrew *מָרַץ (māráṣ, “to be sick, to feel/cause pain”) not attested in the Qal. Compare Akkadian 𒍼 (marṣum, “disease; difficult, troublesome”) and Arabic مَرَض (maraḍ, “disease, illness”).
