Derived from Classical Latin spōnsus (“groom; fiancé”), derived from spondeō (“I promise, I bind or pledge myself”).

     And I will make the voice of joy and the voice of gladness to disappear from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem; the voice of the groom, and the voice of the bride; for the land will be undone.
