Etymology[edit]

Ultimately borrowing from Arabic صُفَّة (ṣuffa, sofa, long seat made of stone or brick), from Aramaic צפא (ṣipā’, mat). The word may have entered European languages via Turkish or through the Moorish occupation of Spain.
