The meaning was given to the word for it's similar sound to the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] German word Ziffer meaning digit, and for its connection to the root ס־פ־ר (s-p-r, Forming words relating to counting). The German word it self comes from Arabic صِفْرٌ (ṣifrun, zero).[1]
