Yiddish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Russian or Ukrainian поля́к (polják).
Noun[edit]
פּאָליאַק • (polyak) m, plural פּאָליאַקן (polyakn), feminine פּאָליאַטשקע (polyatshke)
- Pole (non-Jewish person from Poland)
Usage notes[edit]
Yiddish rigorously distinguishes between Jews and non-Jews in national terminology. A Polish Jew is not a polyak, but rather a פּוילישער (poylisher).
