[edit]From Middle High German veizte f (“fat, fatness”), from Old High German feizitī (“fat, fatness”), derived from feizit (“fat”), from Proto-West Germanic *faitid. The metathesis in Yiddish (-ts in stead of -st) probably under influence of פֿעט (fet), from the same Proto-Germanic word through Middle Low German.
