Etymology

Uncertain, but usually regarded as a non-Semitic Afro-Asiatic loanword, see Akkadian 𒄠𒋛 (pīru).

Other Semitic cognates include Aramaic פִּילָא (pīlā) and Arabic فِيل (fīl). Compare also Old Armenian փիղ (pʻił), Persian پیل (pīl), Sanskrit पीलु (pīlu).
