Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Semitic *ḳ-r-ʔ, possibly from Proto-Afroasiatic. Cognate to Arabic ق ر ء (q-r-ʔ), Classical Syriac ܩ-ܪ-ܐ (q-r-ʾ). Compare Tamahaq ăɣăr (read, call) and Hausa kira (call, invite).
